Following the end of the Cold War and the opening of China, the world enjoyed a period of “globalization” not seen since the end of the 19th century. But over the past decade, we have seen a decline in democracy and institutional strength, an increase in military conflict, and a dramatic growth in protectionist measures across major economies. Global value chains are being reshaped. Underlying these trends is the rise of “multipolarity” - an international environment where several strong political and economic powers compete for dominance.

But is the world really “multipolar”? Can polarity be measured? Where does Canada stand? What are Scenarios for how the world could look in 2040 or 2050?

Club Member Michael McAdoo is one year into a three-year study of Multipolarity at BCG’s Think Tank, the Bruce Henderson Institute. He and his team have developed a practical definition of sources of power – Economic, Military, and ‘Soft Power’. In this session, we will explore where the world has come from and where it might be going in the future. Michael will be joined by his full-time Research Director, Chikara Onda, who is visiting Montréal from BCG New York.
