Remembrance Day VIP Royal Montreal Regiment Tour Series #2
The University Club of Montréal is proud to present a special series of events leading up to Remembrance Day 2026. We invite members and their guests to save the following dates:
Thursday, October 1 : The Royal Montreal Regiment (RMR) Wednesday, November 4 : Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal
The Royal Montreal Regiment (RMR) traces its origins to August 1914 as part of Canada’s immediate response to the First World War. The unit was raised through the amalgamation of companies from three distinguished Montreal Militia regiments: the Canadian Grenadier Guards, the Victoria Rifles of Canada, and the 65th Regiment, Carabiniers Mont-Royal. As the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) organized, the unit was redesignated the 14th Battalion (RMR). While the 14th Battalion provided its combat lineage, the Regiment's legal roots also trace back to the authorization of the 58th Westmount Rifles on November 2, 1914, with the two units eventually amalgamating in 1920 to take the current regimental name.
The Regiment's history is defined by profound wartime sacrifice: of the more than 6,000 men who passed through its ranks in World War I, roughly 75% became casualties, and 1,193 RMR soldiers died in service to King and Country in France and Flanders in WW1 alone. This legacy of valor continued through the Second World War and subsequent service in nearly every operational theatre Canada has entered, including Korea, various peacekeeping missions, and Afghanistan. Today, the RMR serves as a Primary Reserve infantry regiment headquartered at the Major-General C.B. Price Armoury in Westmount, and is a key component of the 2nd Canadian Division's 34 Canadian Brigade Group.
As Canada's first officially recognized bilingual military unit—a status born from its diverse English and French founding regiments—the RMR continues to train citizen-soldiers for both domestic operations and international deployments.
