Sandra Paikowsky’s presentation will focus on Morrice’s Venice paintings at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the ways they reflect his identity as the first modern Canadian artist.
James Wilson Morrice (1865-1924) was born in Montreal and moved to Paris in his early 20's for much of his life. At the turn of the century, Venice was the most popular painting place for international artists, and Morrice was the first Canadian and one of the few foreign painters to make regular trips to Venice from the mid-1890s through the first decade of the 1900s. He was also the first and only Canadian artist to show in the Biennale di Venezia until Canada's official participation in 1952.
